I Oh You are a collective made up of handsome young men and women aimed at injecting DIY entertainment back into Melbourne’s CBD and surrounds. This is achieved by throwing venue sized gigs in backyards through out the city. “It’s about getting good people together to have a good time.” Johann Ponniah, one of the founders, tells Spook. It’s speculated that parties like this will replace the 15-20% of venues rumored to close at the end of 2010. As long as youth continue to migrate to Melbourne there will be a need for live music and parties. If you can’t get to the venue then bring the venue to you.
With some of their previous party guest lists exceeding 400 people, it’s a clear indicator that I Oh You have already found a receptive audience. Spook attended their most recent party held in Richmond and got well and truly immersed in the tree climbing, dust storm action created by Triple J High School Unearthed winner Howl and Mitchell Sim’s band, In Tongues. We danced and consumed, while dodging lemon missiles launched from a cute girl in a tree. The party was impressive .
When the dust did settled and the Police came to do what they do to loud parties on Friday nights, those who where able to leave, left. We left and followed the caravan towards the Terminus. I had lemon in my eye, but it was worth it.
