“I like to think I’m a mix of Little Lu Lu and Iggy Pop, with a bit of Snoop Doggy Dog. I spend my time wearing out crayons and watching Arthur, and taking a rest now and then to try out the latest Margiela DIY, which has most recently resulted in a tire around my neck. I take part in a rap group with a pirate, and we write about Japanese designers and furry vests. Pleasure to make your acquaintance.” -Tavi

That was Tavi Gevinson or better know these days as, The Style Rookie’s about me. And you wouldn’t believe it but she’s only 13. This world famous pint sized fashion blogger who probably hasn’t even sprouted pubes or had her period yet is making a huge sensation from the front to the back row of the fashion world.
Hailing from Chicago, but with Norweign roots, Tavi Gevinson lives the life of any other ordinary 13 year old. She says that she likes to see a movie or go to the park with her friends in her spare time and has an interest in theatre. She has homework to do, and she even got locked out of her house before doing an interview for INTERVIEW magazine. A world that any 13 year old is familiar with.

But then, what 13 year old girl gets sent free leggings from Rodarte and shirts from Commes Des Garcons and also gets invited to sit in the front row of their fashion show? The answer is probably not a lot, but then again there are not a lot of girls like Tavi.
Her image is prepubescent and cute, but that’s the exact opposite of what she wants to be seen as. When asked to elaborate on what she meant when she said she wanted to “ outgrow being 12” she said, “Yeah just ‘cause I’ve been kind of like, a twelve year old blogger for a long time. Once I’m thirteen I’ll just be an annoying teenager and not like a cute little girl”.
Cute or not, Tavi is fast becoming a symbol for the power of the internet and of youth today. She even quotes that the internet was where her interest in fashion sprouts from.

“ It’s amazing what you can find. There are so many different resources on the Internet and I got into blogging because of my friend’s sister”.

Undoubtedly, Tavi’s sense of maturity and use of language is well beyond her years. Her mish-mash of color, texture and pattern has forged herself a super identity. As well as a super style of her own. To think that she hasn’t even reached adolescence is baffling not only for residential bloggers but for the world as well.
Kate and Laura Mulleavy who were behind the Rodarte for Target campaign say that, “Tavi’s a dreamer, and that definitely reminds us of ourselves when we were younger”. It’s high time that we realise that if someone as young as Tavi can make it into this industry, then our dreams are probably not short of coming true too.
