VIVID DAYDREAM

Published on December 19, 2011

Words: Sarah Pratt

Ballet is beautiful, but it can also be scary. For starters, looking at a ballerina’s footsies after a hard day’s dance is not exactly pretty, in fact it can be quite horrifying. A bit of blood with a dash of blister juice stains the ends of countless pointe shoes everywhere. But whilst there’s pain, and if you have an old school teacher who holds a stick well then there will definitely be pain, ballet is indeed beautiful. Ivana Patarcic has captured the elegance of dance by combining it with the beauty of fashion, and we’re pretty excited to share it with you. If you too would like to submit a series, please email us at submissions@spookmag.com

WHO: Ivana Patarcic.
AGE: 25.
FROM: I was born and raised in Croatia, but for the past 5 years I have been living in Dublin.
EXPERIENCE: I have had a passion for taking photos for as long as I can remember, but more professionally and intensive since last year.
JOB: I am currently studying photography for level 5 BTEC Higher National Diploma in New Media Technology College (NMTC) in Dublin.
WHERE: I found this little alley off the busiest street in Dublin and I couldn’t stop thinking how beautiful the light is at any time of the day. That made me want to come back once I had a really special idea in mind, and I think Chloe as the ballerina was ideal.
TIME: After we finished with the make up and hair, we were shooting for just 2 hours. I was shocked looking at the beautiful Chloe warming up – she only took 5 minutes.
PEOPLE: The amazing talented team consisted of Lisa Marie McCarroll (stylist), Terence Murphy (hair stylist), Robert Hoary (make up artist) and Chloë Keogan (model).
CLOTHES: Lisa sourced most of the clothes from a great vintage shop 9 Crow street (Dublin), and Zara.
CAMERA: I used my 5D Mark ii and 50 mm 1.4 lens.
WHY: As the title suggests, I had such a vivid daydream months before our shoot, and I contacted Chloe to see if she would she be interested, and our shoot was organised in 2 days. “We photograph things in order to drive them out of our minds. My stories are a way of shutting my eyes” – Franz Kafka
FAVOURITE: My favourite is the one where Chloe is leaning on the wall with a beautiful light at the back, especially on her hair.
