LOSING OUR MINDS

Published on December 26, 2011

Words: Sarah Pratt

When I was sixteen I wasn’t doing much. You probably weren’t either. Okay, so maybe you were a cool sixteen year old in your day. Maybe you were the exception. Maybe you made the girls swoon. Maybe you made the boys cry. I doubt it, but maybe. Coolness, however, doesn’t always go hand in hand with talent. That’s why when you take a gander at Sophia Schultz snaps, you have to ask yourself: what the hell was I doing with my life at sixteen? Creating beautiful photographic series? Doubtful. But if you happened to answer yes, well then you should send them our way via submissions@spookmag.com

WHO: Sophia Schultz.
AGE: 16.
FROM: Florida.
EXPERIENCE: I’ve been taking photos since I was young, mainly with disposable cameras and the cameras lying around my house. I started using film about a year ago and since then I have been mainly taking pictures of large concepts or just adventures with my friends.
JOB: I’m a junior in high school right now, but I tutor and give sailing lessons in my spare time.
WHERE: All over the city I live in – train carts, abandoned buildings, trees, museums.
TIME: Varied over hours, days, and months.
PEOPLE: Myself and my friend Isabel Saez-Flores a long with some other close friends.
CLOTHES: All our own.
CAMERA: Pentax MX, Pentax K1000, and a disposable camera.
WHY: This set of pictures describe the changes of our moods and thoughts. We went from living our lives in happiness and joy to slowly losing our minds. We would take pictures everywhere we went.
FAVOURITE: My favorite is the one of Isabel in the shower, the lighting turned out redish and it worked well overall.
