INTRODUCING ALICE CAMM
Words: Sarah Pratt
Our childhoods are full of monsters – teachers, parents, best friend’s mum, weird-next-door-neighbour-kid. But one of the worst would have to come in the form of an older brother. Older siblings can be, and I use the word ‘human’ loosely, but horrible human beings. Brothers seem to have an innate understanding of which pressure points will inflict the greatest pain against their younger and more vulnerable sisters. They are pure evil. They are pure monsters. Therefore, it’s surprising to find out that some people spent their childhood creating additional sadistic creatures to the already well populated table. Well, in Alice Camm’s case inventing monsters founded her desire to transform thoughts into illustrations – some of which we are showcasing today. So if you too have turned a thought into a pretty picture then send us an email to submissions@spookmag.com
NAME: Alice Camm.
AGE: 19.
FROM: I live in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia.
EXPERIENCE: I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember. I used to spend my time inventing monsters and writing stories and making comics or picture books for them. I was very inspired by Pokemon, Digimon and cartoons from Nickelodeon. My mother was teaching Folk Art classes at the time, and taught me some basic techniques, and the ball just rolled on from there.
JOB: I’m a full time student studying Fine Arts at the University of Tasmania. I’m just about to start my second year, and I plan to major in Visual Communication (Graphic Design) and Drawing, hopefully leading to a career in illustration.
WHY: Everything. Creating images that are aesthetically appealing is a challenge that I really enjoy. I’ve always been a visual person, and being able to communicate my thoughts through images is the best way I know how.
INSPIRATION: Many of the artists in Café Con Leche are totally fantastic. Inechi (Inés Estrada) and LaLa (Lauren Albert) in particular are where I draw a lot of my inspiration. However I have many sources including tumblr and deviantART. I find that lesser known artists produce works that are more personal and for themselves, and I love that.
