INTRODUCING SARAH HANKINSON

Published on February 9, 2012

Words: Sarah Pratt

Drawing people is hard. Really hard. Have you ever attempted to draw a hand? That’s not a fun task. It’s so frustrating and eventually after rubbing out what can only be described as a squid-fish-esque-palm you decide that your ‘people’ drawings really like gloves. Even if you have a blistering sun in your picture, your people are still wearing gloves – mittens to be exact. Sarah Hankinson, however, doesn’t seem to have a problem when it comes to recreating extremities, in fact Sarah Hankinson has the ability to draw people in a flawless fashion. Yes, she draws models, but they too have hands. It’s not easy, okay, maybe it is for her. She is pretty talented, but you probably are too, so if you have something you want to share with us then send us an email to submissions@spookmag.com

NAME: Sarah Hankinson.
AGE: 29.
FROM: I live in St Kilda and work from a studio in St Kilda East. I’m about to start a shared studio space in Prahran which I’m fairly exited about.
EXPERIENCE: It took me a while to find my feet – initially I studied graphic design then changed to fine arts before finding an illustration course – the perfect combination! I finished in 2004 and worked on weekends on my illustration before slowly getting to the point I’m at now where I freelance full time. My first big break was with Girlfriend Magazine.
JOB: Thankfully this is it! I work on my illustrations from a studio with other designers/illustrators, I also work one day per week in a fashion boutique which is actually nice change of pace!
WHY: I love being able to create beautiful imagery.
INSPIRATION: Kat Macleod, Julia Verhoeven, and Niki Pilkington amongst many others.
