THE VACCINES ARE IN TOWN
January 25, 2012Okay... Here is a quick glimpse of what’s to come in Issue Six. Taken by the wonderful Elvina Mae as part of a shoot we did with British quartet The Vaccines, we thought we should take this opportunity to shamelessly promote our new issue and get you drooling. We also interviewed them, if you’re asking. We spoke about celebrity crushes, the MGM Grand and the Scandinavian rap scene. It got a little weird to say the least, but even after all that we still thought they’d be suitable candidates to take home to our mums.

Kick the big C in the teeth for Genny B
January 25, 2012Melbournites might be familiar with the voice of the exquisite Genevieve Blackmore a.k.a. Genny B a.k.a. co-host of RRR’s Livewire on Saturday nights. Well if her uncanny ability to create a pun has made you so much as chuckle, you can now pay her back. You see, Genny B has cancer. You don’t have to have cancer to know that it sucks. You feel rubbish and there are lots of pretty awful treatments that end up costing a small fortune.

THE SUN ARAW EXPERIENCE
January 24, 2012I caught Sun Araw (Cameron Stallones) at the Sugar Mountain Festival in Melbourne’s amazing Forum Theatre. Once I finally managed to drag myself away from the makeshift rave DJ Yamantaka Eye had pumping away on the mezzanine-turned-club, I headed upstairs to secure myself prime position in the Forum II to beat what would then become a full house. Eventually Stallones appeared on the large but undeniably intimate stage below, along with his two cohorts, a saxophonist demonstrating meticulous focus (if you could have titled him as such – in front of him were almost a square metre of electronics), and an impressively competent guitarist, who to me only fifteen minutes earlier in the room outside, was just some guy displaying an unusual amount of enthusiasm for what seemed to be an extremely bizarre performance art installation.

AIR
January 23, 2012Quite a few of us partake in some sort of photography training during our high school days. Taking photos of our friends, what could be better? They didn't tell us we had to write about it. They didn't tell us how potent the developing chemicals would be. They didn't tell us how expensive the photographic paper was and how useless it became after you exposed it to the sun - okay, maybe they warned us about that one. Whatever the case, photography is a lot harder than it sounds, hence the plethora of apps that make it easy as pie to take a decent snap. You're fooling no one. Without Instagram you'd be nothing. That's why very few of us actually carry on with the 'skills' acquired during 'Studio Arts' (as some schools so pretentiously put it). Fortunately, Bonnie Hansen kept at it, and today we're lucky enough to share some of her beautiful work.

INTRODUCING ALEXIS WINTER
January 19, 2012Alexis Winter is a catch. Her creations are nothing short of awe inspiring - transporting you into a world usually only accessible through a cocktail of illicit treats. Quite simply, her work is rad. And as you will read below, her talent is not confined to the playful improvisation of a pen - she can string words together too. She's funny, probably funnier than you, definitely funnier than us. Again, Alexis Winter is a catch. So we've taken a moment to wipe the drool from our chins and share with you what we consider to be some of the finest work ever to grace our site.

XXX
January 18, 2012Group sex, drugs, prostitution and guns. Apparently that is what can happen when you trawl the streets of Kings Cross. I’ve never witnessed it myself, but I read books, watch movies and talk to people like Jon Hewitt. And he is enough of a local, ‘most of the hookers won’t ask if I want a fuck because they know me.’ So that counts for something, right? Aside from all that, Jon Hewitt makes films. His most recent, ‘X’, follows a night in the lives of two prostitutes, one high-class about to escape the Cross, and one who has just arrived. SPOOK speaks to Jon about living and shooting films in the Cross, fuckaware parties and facing critics like Jon Faine.

One A Day
January 17, 2012You know that friend of yours who is just really good at music? Maybe not even playing it or writing it or anything, but just always knows whats up as if it's his job? Basically, everybody likes music (except for people who don't like music, but they are called serial killers, you guys. Don't hang out with them) it's just that some people like it enough make everything easier for the rest of us by being ace at telling us about it. Jonno Seidler from ONE A DAY is one of those guys.

METCALFE LAGOON
January 16, 2012People are great. You can do a lot of things with them: eat, sleep, laugh, cry. They definitely serve their purpose. But sometimes they can be very annoying. Sometimes you don't even want to look at them. And so for the people who have had enough of looking at people, this post is for you. Kasi Metcalfe took a recent dive and captured a 'what-would-I-see-if-I-was-a-fish' kind of series. Yes, Kasi has taken her fisheye photography to a very literal level, but the end result is a pretty special and so we thought we would share them with you.

THEE OH SEES ARE NATION BUILDERS
January 13, 2012Sugar Mountain sounds like another world. Not really, it sounds like a mountain. But hypothetically, if Sugar Mountain was a world you’d want to go to it. Sadly, however, space travel is reserved for astronauts and those with expendable bank accounts. So stuff the world theory, let’s make it a country, much cheaper that way (especially in the hypothetical world). But before you visit said country you need a bit of enticement and who better to ask than someone from the stellar line-up. We gave the delightful Bridgid Dawson of Thee Oh Sees a call and she gave us a country profile for not only Sugar Mountain, but San Francisco too, for as many wise folk will tell you San Fran is its own little world, or in this case a country. Hypothetically of course.

A SUGAR COATED HORIZON
January 12, 2012For its second year running, SUGAR MOUNTAIN Festival is bringing the latest and greatest alternative All Stars to the Forum Theatre for one date only. The wonderful likes of Deerhoof, Three oh Sees, tUnEyArDs, Sun Araw, Prince Rama, Shabazz Palaces, Julianna Barwick and John Maus will all be playing across various stages throughout the day. See, I was not getting overly excited about nothing like usual. This little independent collective has done one incredible job and it's absolutely certain to be an unforgettable day. That is unless your love/hate relationship with alcohol rears its head...
