INTRODUCING JACK TURNER (STUBBY)

INTRODUCING JACK TURNER (STUBBY)

January 12, 2012

Now that's a lie. We've already introduced you to Jack, but instead of showcasing his talent, we abused him. Forced him to work until he sweat. Sold his body to the highest bidder. Watched him ingest moldy nuggets and subsequently bring them back up again. We have pretty much made him our office pet. But this cutie pie has talent and we'd be fools not to show what dear ol' Stubby can do when he has a pen handy. He is a rarity - destined for fame or incarceration. We're still undecided.

FELIX

FELIX DA VINTAGE HOUSECAT

January 11, 2012

When I was in school my friends and I dreamed of owning our own store. It was to be essentially a café. Slash bar. Slash live music venue. Slash art gallery. Slash record store. Slash bookstore. Slash tattoo parlour. We planned to do nothing but hang out in this imaginary haven as we grew older, and all live and work together in the shop, very much like Liv Tyler and Renee Zellweger circa ‘Empire Records’. That all sounded like too much work in the end, so we all now work in crap retail jobs. But for some people, the vision of owning the store of your dreams comes true. This is true in the case of Max Johnson, who has opened up an amazing store, Felix, on the ideal beachfront of Dromana. Felix is an eclectic space, full of antiques, artwork, craft, and more sweet knick-knacks than you can handle. So if you happen to be frolicking in the peninsula sun this summer, do yourself a favour and pop in to say hello. They are really nice. And they might even let you live there.

THE BEAUTIFUL CHILDREN OF CAMBODIA

THE BEAUTIFUL CHILDREN OF CAMBODIA

January 9, 2012

We have never published A Week In Submission quite like this. Whilst volunteering in the village of Por Thom, Patrica Casten captured some extraordinary moments of Cambodia's beautiful children, and we cannot begin to express how grateful we are to be able to share them with you. At only seventeen, Patrica possesses a great talent for documentary photography - capturing one of a kind photos that are without a doubt some of the most beautiful images we have ever published.

METRONOMY

A VERY METRONOMY CHRISTMAS

January 6, 2012

Yeah we know, Christmas is over, but 'tis still the season to be jolly. Especially when Metronomy are in town. Last month we spoke to Gbenga about coming out to Australia again, Christmas carolling and probably most important - his love for Oporto. Whilst chatting we decided/forced Gbenga to help devise a comic. It's pretty special. A Christmas tale involing Kanye, and Bon Iver, and shorts! Oh, my!

VEGE-WHOOPS! ANOTHER PR FAIL FOR KRAFT

January 5, 2012

Given Australia's favourite toast spread maintains a massive monopoly in the industry of concentrated yeast extracts, the board members and stock holders of a certain American-owned (ssshhh) company may remain happy little Vegemites -- but today another PR bungle suggested they might not be as bright as bright can be. This time, however, it may not have been their fault. Two and a bit years after Kraft introduced the debacle that was iSnack 2.0 -- the web-based name-our-product initiative that lasted five days before being turfed into the dumpster diving bin and replaced with something eminently more sensible sounding -- along comes a fresh debacle for the rosy-cheeked folk at Vegemite.

INTRODUCING ALICE CAMM

INTRODUCING ALICE CAMM

January 5, 2012

Our childhoods are full of monsters - teachers, parents, best friend's mum, weird-next-door-neighbour-kid. But one of the worst would have to come in the form of an older brother. Older siblings can be, and I use the word 'human' loosely, but horrible human beings. Brothers seem to have an innate understanding of which pressure points will inflict the greatest pain against their younger and more vulnerable sisters. They are pure evil. They are pure monsters. Therefore, it's surprising to find out that some people spent their childhood creating additional sadistic creatures to the already well populated table. Well, in Alice Camm's case inventing monsters founded her desire to transform thoughts into illustrations - some of which we are showcasing today.

WAITING FOR EDEN - By Julia Stone

CHAPTER ONE: WAITING FOR EDEN

January 4, 2012

It isn’t always like this. Certainly not. Some days are brighter. Yes, definitely brighter. That is a good way to describe the other days. But what about this one? It isn’t dark, it isn’t light, it is somewhere in between - like that colour you never know the name for. Not quite blue and not quite green, though you couldn’t call it aqua. The place of indecision. The place of the unknown. The place where the details cease to really matter, and yet there is a kind of undercurrent of frustration at not knowing where you are.

JULIA STONE WRITES FOR SPOOK - Illustraion by Sharni Brear

JULIA STONE WRITES FOR SPOOK

January 3, 2012

Tomorrow. Julia Stone writes for SPOOK tomorrow. Sorry, that title probably made you think it was today. Whoops-a-daisy! Technically she wrote for SPOOK ages ago, so we could probably just publish it right now, but we're going to make you wait. Come on, it's not like we're in high school and making you wait two and a half years before cheating on you with some toolbag readership we met over New Years. It's only one sleep. Think of it like food - a good bolognese sauce can take hours, many hours, sometimes all day. We're pretty much preparing a pasta of creative minds and Julia Stone is kicking things off in the kitchen. So what kind of pasta are we talking about? I guess it's like that one with lots of colours? The green and orange one? Enough pasta analogies. We're aiding the creation of a story written by different people.

GOODBYE 2011 – FALLS FESTIVAL WRAP UP

January 2, 2012

The New Years hype is dying down, our hangovers are beginning to fade, people are starting to shower, and breakfast Jägerbombs doesn't quite have the same ring to it as it did two days ago. And with that, we start the annual avalanche of photos capturing New Years antics. A time when our friends were happy and life was simple. We treasure those moments. We will look at them time and time again wishing to go back. Yearning to laugh and be merry like we did on those days. If, however, you were too intoxicated or suffering from 'heat exhaustion' to remember such merriness let us help you with our Falls Festival wrap up. Enjoy!

FLEET FOXES

FLEET FOXES’ FUTURE IS UNWRITTEN

December 29, 2011

What would you do in Paris? Climb the Eiffel Tower? Visit the Louvre? Eat croissants? Wear A beret? Man, that's so cliché! Why don't you try something a little different, take a leaf out of Fleet Foxes’ Casey Wescott book and do nothing. It's all the rage these days. So if you're planning a little European adventure in the coming months and find yourself stuck for things to do, give us a call (please note we're currently in the process of obtaining a new direct line for said chats, so... yeah, be patient and stuff). But seriously, here at SPOOK we love a good ol' chat, especially if it's about something as exciting as Fleet Foxes’ latest album. But we're not just about the music, we like to talk about a whole range of things. Anything from Seattle’s lack of sunshine to meditation methods, and of course the upcoming Falls Festival sneaks in there.
