NORTHEAST, BRINGING THE PARTY TO FALLS
December 28, 2011Last year we had these guys play at one of warehouse parties. They ripped it into shreds. We knew they would go far. (Judge them from the photos below). Now one year later, they are performing alongside the likes of Arctic Monkeys and Crystal Castles at Falls Festival. Melbourne’s very own Northeast Party House are taking their shows out of vacant houses and bringing their DIY party vibe to the Grand Theatre. We caught up with lead singer Zachary Hamilton-Reeves to get an idea of what to expect from their shows.

Gems ‘n’ Junk From the Cult Cache: Pulgasari (1985) — directed by a captive, produced by Kim Jong-il
December 27, 2011North Korea’s Dear Leader, the late Kim Jong-il, was talented at a great many things, among them building nuclear weapons, rockin’ a pair of sunnies inside, starving millions of people and looking at inanimate objects. He had a great passion for the cinema; in fact, if you believe the North Korean history books — and what’s not to believe, right? — he invented cinema and wrote prolifically on the subject, including the ‘seminal’ book On the Art of Cinema (1973) and The Cinema and Directing (1987).

LOSING OUR MINDS
December 26, 2011When I was sixteen I wasn't doing much. You probably weren't either. Okay, so maybe you were a cool sixteen year old in your day. Maybe you were the exception. Maybe you made the girls swoon. Maybe you made the boys cry. I doubt it, but maybe. Coolness, however, doesn't always go hand in hand with talent. That's why when you take a gander at Sophia Schultz snaps, you have to ask yourself: what the hell was I doing with my life at sixteen? Creating beautiful photographic series? Doubtful. But if you happened to answer yes, well then you should send them our way via submissions@spookmag.com.

THE LAST GREAT SOUTHERN ADVENTURE
December 23, 2011Facebook is great. You feel like you're traveling the world without stepping foot outside your tiny hell hole of an office. You know the one that doesn't have air con, holds wonderful co-workers with thrilling conversation about their burping new born, and who could forget the awesome pay packet which means you don't just get to work weekdays, but weekends too! Living. The. Dream. Fortunately, we can seek comfort in the fact that most of the time the photos our friends post are cheesy and lame. Except for the The Leaning Tower of Pisa ones, they're pure gold, anyone who says otherwise is a fool. But photos of the world are exciting and beautiful. Especially when they're taken by someone who has a way better camera than your friend's crappy iPhone4, and is doing something a tad more exciting than hooking up with overzealous Europeans. Someone who, for example, is documenting the Wild Animal Recovery Operators in New Zealand, someone like Olivia Page. Now these snaps are rad, epic and all those other words people use to describe amazing stuff. She's even got a book, and because we're super nice and the fat man is coming to a chimney near you, well we thought we'd give you a little sneak peek. Enjoy!

INTRODUCING BROOKE PERSICH
December 22, 2011'Tis the season to be jolly and a little bit hypothetical. For example, when trying to figure out what to get your Kris Kringle for Christmas, you cold ask your brother’s girlfriend: "Hypothetically, if I had you as my KK, what would you like for Christmas?" Perhaps she would reply with: "A print from Brooke Persich’s ’Hypothesis’ series." Now that would be handy, as this week we’re showcasing Brooke’s work and we even have those conveniently displayed links that will take you to her online store. But seriously, hurry the fuck up. Christmas is three sleeps away. What are you doing man? Get to it!

HAPPY 2 B SAD CAN MAKE YOU PRETTY HAPPY
December 21, 2011Hands up if you’ve ever kept a diary? Those who have will know that they can be incredibly dangerous in the wrong hands. When I was in year seven my younger siblings found my grade six diary and paraded about the house laughing and screaming out the contents. I was so embarrassed that I didn’t just throw it in the bin, I set it on fire and watched as the pages lit up, content with knowing that it would never be read again. Unlike my 12-year-old self Natalya Lobanova publishes her diary for all to see. Natalya’s blog, Happy 2 B Sad, is a combination of illustrations and text that depict her life experiences. SPOOK chatted to Natalya about her blog and putting her life on the net.

VIVID DAYDREAM
December 19, 2011Ballet is beautiful, but it can also be scary. For starters, looking at a ballerina’s footsies after a hard day’s dance is not exactly pretty, in fact it can be quite horrifying. A bit of blood with a dash of blister juice stains the ends of countless pointe shoes everywhere. But whilst there’s pain, and if you have an old school teacher who holds a stick well then there will definitely be pain, ballet is indeed beautiful. Ivana Patarcic has captured the elegance of dance by combining it with the beauty of fashion, and we're pretty excited to share it with you.

LA: EVERYTHING YOU ALWAYS KNEW YOU ALWAYS WANTED BUT DIDN’T SAY
December 15, 2011There are cities you always knew you would like. London, Paris, New York; they are written into your DNA as deeply as our assurance The Avalanches will make another album, and your parents gave up sex with their Beta player. Others hold less cultural esteem. In fact, to mention your non ironic love for Vegas, Sydney (said the Melbournian in glasses) and anything hosting a quarter, half or full moon party is up there with mentioning how much of a bitch your year nine home room teacher is. So I guess I’m not blowing any minds when I include LA on that list. It seems there is nothing cooler than talking about how shit LA is.

December 15, 2011Pat Grant is a ridiculously talented person who draws things. In fact, he is so ridiculous and so talented that the people who decide such things just let him build a book. Before you run out, blindly into the street (which street? ANY streets! it's available everywhere) you can check out his drawings in the pages of Surfing Life, Tracks, Beat, Going Down Swinging and 3D World.
